Signs and Times

Isaiah 2:1-5, Matthew 24:36-44

We aren’t good at waiting. It isn’t in our cultural DNA. We want everything right now. Fast food isn’t fast enough, so we put in drive-through windows. Prepackaged meal preparation wasn’t fast enough, so now we put it in a microwave. We don’t like standing in line. I’ve jumped from one line to the next, hoping that the new one would go faster, only to discover that the original started moving. And I felt like I lost some competition! Are we there yet?

That is why Advent is such a difficult season—because it is all about waiting! No wonder each Advent season is a wrestling bout between poor, overmatched Advent and the cultural juggernaut called Christmas. We might as well give in and admit that all we are doing is trying to hold back the tide that will bring Christmas crashing to the shores of our lives with certain inevitability. We ask "Why fight it?
